Most skating rinks now use novelties (aka cheap plastic toys). Some give these away as ticket redemption prizes on their games, and most also sell the toys. These items have huge margins and they're very popular with the kids.

Always skate smart. Use appropriate protective gear. If you're not an experienced skater then learn to skate indoors at a roller skating rink. It's a flat and smooth surface with no traffic to deal with. Take lessons.
