Skate Mate Trainers

We just got back from a rink meeting and one subject that came up was the Skate Mate devices. Approximately half the rinks at the meeting had them and most of those were pretty enthusiastic about the devices. If you haven't tried them, they're a training device for beginning skaters. The trainer is made of PVC material and it goes in front of the skater, similar to the walkers that some senior citizens use. It provides stability and confidence to beginning skaters.

We knew this was a good item, because a lot of the rinks that have ordered them are calling back to get more. Here are some ideas from the meeting that might help those of you that already have the Skate Mates:

Charge a deposit of $1 or $2, then refund that when they return them. This will make sure they bring them back.

If they're not an immediate hit, give a free rental out early at each session. The others will see them out on the floor and want one.

Consider renting them by the hour. Some skaters won't need them the whole session and this will let you rent the same one several times per session.

The Skate Mates come in small (25.5"), medium (28.5"), large (31.5"), or extra large (34"). Medium is the most popular size. They ask that you order in multiples of 5. White with red attachments are standard, other color options are available for an extra fee.

They also now have Skate Mate Storage Cart. They're made of the same material, they measure 31" x 21", and they hold 20 Skate Mates.

Always skate smart. Use appropriate protective gear. If you're not an experienced skater then learn to skate indoors at a roller skating rink. It's a flat and smooth surface with no traffic to deal with. We strongly encourage you to take lessons (most skating rinks offer them).
